Writing with empathy will make you a better writer.

Often when we sit to write some content, we just start by writing the first thing that comes to our mind. This is called a first draft. Sometimes if we’re not too busy we may go back to look at it. More often than not we just take a second look to make sure there are no glaring spelling mistakes.

Next time you sit down to write something to your customers or clients, take a second. Close your eyes and just imagine you are your ideal customer. Have that image so clear in your mind, really put yourself in their shoes. Connect with their experience and the problem they’re trying to solve.

What does it feel to have this problem?

What would you consider doing to overcome such a problem?

What solutions may have you already tried to overcome this problem?

This is a great way to connect with your customer’s experience and to demonstrate how you can provide real value in overcoming the problems they face. This should be just enough to give you the momentum you need to begin writing some amazing content that is useful and purposeful.

Or just ask your current customers.

If that doesn’t seem to work for you, you might already have your ideal customers and there is no harm in asking them a few questions; especially if it means they’ll be getting a better service from it.

A few ways you can get some customer feedback is by asking open questions;

Why did you choose me over other companies?

What have you found to be most helpful in my service/product?

In what ways can I better serve you and help you find solutions?

What is the biggest problem you’re trying to solve in the next 6 months?

Understand what your existing customer base is experience can definitely provide you with some inspiration to begin writing new content for your brand. This can begin a whole new journey of how your business can truly connect with your customers.

Now it’s over to you..

Who is my ideal customer?

You can identify your ideal customer through 3 steps.

1. Your ideal customer has a problem

2. Your ideal customer is aware of their problem

3. Your ideal customer has a means and/or desire to find a solution to their problem.

It’s important you identify who your ideal customer is by understanding how they fit into all of the criteria.

Without any problems, there will be no value to offer.

Without any awareness of the problems, the customer won’t know that they need your service.

Without and means or desire to find a solution to their problems, they won’t see you as offering a solution.

If you are struggling to find your ideal customer image, ask yourself these questions;

 Who is my no.1 customer?

Is there anything about this customer, or my experience with them, that I would like to change?

Who is my least favourite customer, and what would I like to change about them?

From here you can begin creating a picture of your ideal customer. Ask yourself some of the following questions to help you narrow down to who your perfect customer is.

 – What problem are they trying to solve?

 – What makes them a great customer?

 – Are there important demographic traits that make them such a great customer?

If you are able to answer all of these points you are now in a better position to visualise your ideal customer. It may be easier for you to visualise your ideal customer by finding a photo and making sure this is visible when you begin writing.

The power of this exercise will help you to achieve the following two goals

1. It helps you to create a strong sense of clarity in your writing.

2. This will naturally allow you to tap into empathy, enabling you to write more meaningful content

By achieving these two things, you immediately have a recipe for a success. Speaking with clarity and understanding will come across on the page. The person you’re speaking to will connect immediately. This is how you build relationships, this is how you create a sense of interaction, this is how you turn a simple webpage into something personable.

Writing with empathy will make you a better writer.

The Village Bakehouse

A local bakery starting up wanted some help to design the logo, look and feel ahead of beginning to sell at the London’s Farmers Market at Primrose Hill and others across North London.

Marianna had just completed her baking qualification from Le Cordan Bleu and was keen to begin selling some of delicious pastries and baked goods. She contacted me very early on this process to talk through potential names and brainstorm how we could turn her vision into a reality.

Many pastries and conversations later, we had put together the final designs and the market stall prototype to submit an application to The Spread, Myddleton Road Market, London’s Farmers Markets and more. These are not the easiest food markets to be accepted into it and it was a great triumph to finally see this vision play out.

I had visited Marianna on numerous occasions at the Market to also teach and support how we can market her presence as a new food stall and these popular and competitive markets. We identified the unique selling point, engaged with many new followers and gaining loyal regulars. It has been a very excited experience for me as much as it has been for founder, maybe it’s my love for cakes, or maybe it’s seeing a single female entrepreneur succeed in doing what she loves.
